Game Wrap 7/4/2011: Padres 5 Giants 3

This game could be summed up in one word: BABIP! While I don't completely buy into the notion that all balls put into play are subject entirely to luck, it is undeniable that luck plays a big role. Today, as seems to happen so often, the Padres BIPs found holes in the defense and the Giants BIPs found gloves. Simple as that. Key Lines:

Aaron Rowand- 0 for 5. BA= .246. Oh my! Against a LHP no less. Gamer hit a couple of balls hard, but you need to get more out of your leadoff hitter.

Pablo Sandoval- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(8). Great game at the plate for Pablo. Too bad he didn't get much support in the lineup.

Cody Ross- 1 for 1, 2 BB. BA= .273. Ross came out with a "mild" hammy strain. Losing him to another DL stint would be a serious setback to the offense.

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .216. Crawford continued to look good at the plate and get quality AB's.

Tim Lincecum- 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.14. At least 3 of the 7 hits and 2 of the runs were the direct result of BABIP luck. Of course, when Tim is really right, he doesn't have to worry about BABIP because opposing hitters just don't put many balls in play off of him.

A bit of good news: Buster Posey has his cast off and told Kruk the pain is gone. He looked happy in the dugout. Don't rush it Buster! Get completely well!! Also, Freddy Sanchez is starting to hit off a tee and could be back as early as the first of August.

Just a thought: After literally cringing every time Emmanuel Burriss came up today, I wondered if the Padres would trade O-Dog to the Giants for a 2'nd or 3'rd tier prospect?

The D'Backs won today so the Giants will definitely lose a game to their closest pursuers in the NL West to 2 games. The Rockies and Dodgers play later. The Pesky, Pesky Padres climbed to 9 games behind and have won 7 of their last 10.

Matt Cain takes the mound tomorrow against another guy who gives the Giants fits, Tim Stauffer.

  2. Yup. The extra bases taken at will made a significant difference in the game.

  3. If Ross goes down, the O takes a big hit.

Crawford is slowly putting things together. Between today and yesterday lot of grounders though.

Something seems to be continuing to be wrong with Torres.

rockies lose; Dodgers down to mets at this time.

When the greatest production by the 1st and 2nd hitters is a HBP, things need changing.

  4. Do u think Thomas Neal gets called up if Ross is out for awhile?

  5. Neal and Peguero are both already on the 40 man roster so it seems like one of those two would be the logical choice. Neal seems to have a bit more experience at higher levels, but Peguero sure raked from the get-go in Richmond. Rushing Belt back up is another possibility.

  6. Hey everybody! There's an article over on fangraphs.com up about Ryan Vogelsong. I wrote the first comment which I think you all would enjoy and heartily agree with. Check it out!

  7. peguero hitting with power in the eastern means a lot...would like to see him get at least a sept call up

neal has a good glove, some speed and a good plate approach

if ross cant go...they have to seriously think about putting him on the dl...what happened today, with pitchers pinch running...is very dangerous...and it looks like neither ross nor pat are 100 percent right now

would hate to see them just wing it through the break

  8. Love to have Orlando, Doc. But I gotta believe that the Padres would rather not help us out (especially for a B-prospect) given our recent history. Nice thought, though.

Realistically, I don't think Timmy is going to improve holding runners on or his time to home. He just hasn't done much to improve it so far in his career. When he's putting guys on, they're just going to run. Cost of doing business for Timmy.

Not expecting miracles from Crawford. Because of his minor league numbers, I didn't expect much from him with the Giants. But, like Belt, I think he is really putting together some quality ABs. He's showing enough to remain a starter.

  9. Hoping Crawford's bat keeps developing because his defense is there...

Somehow Burriss has to slow that adrenaline surge especially with the glove. Kid is quick and fast. No, on Hudson just because...

Sometimes you need a couple loses to remember. MadBum tonight...
