Down on the Farm: 7/5/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies edged the Sacramento River Cats 7-6 in 11 innings:

Justin Christian(CF)- 2 for 4, HR(3), 2 BB, SB(6). BA= .385.
Mike Fontenot(2B)- 2 for 5. BA= .250.
Brandon Belt(1B)- 0 for 4, BB. BA= .324.
Thomas Neal(LF)- 2 for 5, 3B, SB(6). BA= .312.
Hector Sanchez(C)- 2 for 5. BA= .338.
Dan Runzler(LHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.66.
Dan Otero(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.90.

What happened to Tyler Graham? He's suddenly not listed on the Grizzlies' roster. Hector Sanchez is the second youngest player in the PCL. Romero got the start and went 3 IP. Runzler came on in relief and went another 3 with much better results than when he's started. Otero has made 10 appearances for Fresno with 12 K's against just 2 BB's in 10 IP.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Trenton Thunder 5-1(Completion of suspended game from 7/4):

Francisco Peguero(RF)- 2 for 5. BA= .356.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(6). BA= .266.
Johnny Monell(C)- 1 for 3, HR(9), BB. BA= .241.
Juan Perez(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3), SB(14). BA= .233.
Eric Surkamp(LHP)- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 11 K's. ERA= 1.61.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(3). ERA= 3.38.

Monell is hitting .310 over his last 10 games. I guess there is no rush to promote Surkamp, but if he were to perform well at Fresno, it might make the Giants feel a bit more bold about trading a pitcher for hitting.

Richmond Flying Squirrels downed the Trenton Thunder 9-6:

Francisco Peguero(DH)- 1 for 5, HR(3). BA= .340.
Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 2 for 4. BA= .260.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 2 for 4. BA= .284.
Juan Perez(CF)- 2 for 3, 3B, BB. BA= .238.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 4. BA= .219.

Peguero's dinger was a Grand Slam with 2 outs in the 7'th inning. Yeah, the Giants could use some of that!

High A San Jose Giants outslugged the Modesto Nuts 9-5:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(7). BA= .323.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(9), BB. BA= .266.
Tommy Joseph(C)- 2 for 3, 2 HR(9), BB. BA= .246.
Alex Burg(3B)- 1 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .389.

Brown seems to be out of his slump. Joseph is hitting .308 over his last 10 games. He is the 3'rd youngest player in the Cal League. Parker is also hitting .308 over his last 10 games.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets beat the Charleston River Cats 4-1:

Shawn Sanford(RHP)- 8 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 2.66.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(2). ERA= 3.64.

Second strong game in a row by Sanford. Rosin has been used in almost every conceivable situation this year. I see him as a starter long term.

Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Everett Aquasox 7-2:

Brett Krill(RF)- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(1), BB. BA= .286.
Kendry Flores(RHP)- 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 6.60.
Aaron King(LHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 7.11.

Krill is a favorite sleeper of mine. Love his size and deceptive athleticism.

Rookie AZL Giants vs A's suspended after 2 innings with the A's leading 4-0.

DSL Mets dominated the Giants 8-2:

Royel Astacio(3B, 17 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .257.

    peguero's walk off

giants need to sign a long term with richmond...great crowds

not testing surkamp's ceiling is a bit strange, unless the org is looking to make richmond a winner to strengthen the affiliation

not in the stats, but apparently neal got to a ball that was a sure triple, holding the runner to a double, keeping a tie game

  2. Great to see Juan Perez getting a cycle on the day, plus a walk and SB. Is he supposed to be a decent fielder? Though he has a low average it's always seemed like he can slug a little bit.

  3. Surkamp's Ks to innings have to be worthwhile. He is not a Woodie or a Zito...

I also hope they keep Richmond. If these kids can hit there, they are worthwhile...

Saw Perez last year and he was killing to ball. Little bitty guy can hit long...

  5. Dr B, Graham was transferred to San Jose (I think), or placed on the DL.

"Btw Tyler Graham transferred to San Jose roster and Tyler LaTorre is off the DL. Belt tomorrow in Fresno."
