Down on the Farm: 7/11/2011

AAA No games scheduled in the PCL. I think they are on their own All-Star Break.

AA Harrisburg Senators beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-3:

Chris Dominguez(3B)- 3 for 4. BA= .318.
Johnny Monell(C)- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .250.
Sharon Martis(RHP, Senators)- 6 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 10 K's. ERA= 2.60.

Color me impressed with Dominguez' hitting at this level. Monell is hitting .333 over his last 10 games with an OBP of .500. On the season he has an OBP of .341 to go with his .250 BA. An impressive walk rate. Martis is a former Giants farmhand. He is now 24 years old. He seems to have finally found a strikeout pitch as he has 83 K's in 80 IP this year. He seems to have also gained some weight as he is listed at 6'1", 225 lbs.

High A No games scheduled in the Cal League. Brandon Belt has been sent down to get AB's the next two games while the PCL is on their All-Star Break. That would indicate to me that Belt is still a priority in the organization.

Low A No games scheduled in the SAL.

Short Season Tri-City Dust Devils smashed the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 12-2:

Mike Murray(DH)- 2 for 4, HR(5). BA= .443.
Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .257.

What's Murray doing at this level? Man, the Giants are all of a sudden swimming in catchers who seem to be able to hit!

Rookie AZL Giants crushed the Cubs 12-5:

Christian Paulino(2B)- 2 for 2, 3B, 3 BB. BA= .295.
Gus Benusa(CF)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .323.
Ben Thomas(DH)- 3 for 4. BA= .426.
Brian Nicholson(1B)- 2 for 4. BA= .351.
Jose Cuevas(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(4), SF. BA= .229.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Paulino has a 6 game hitting streak in which he is hitting .375(9 for 24) with a double, 2 triples and a HR. Benusa has been in the system a couple years but is still just 20 years old. He has two 3-hit games in a row and is 10 for 23 over his last 6 games. Cuevas has a SLG% of .629. He is 6 for 17 with 2 doubles and 3 HR's in his last 4 games. Extremely small sample size but Blackburn has impressed as an 18 year old HS draftee.

DSL Giants game was postponed.

  1. I wonder about whether or not any of our good-hitting catchers can actually catch well, but hey, it's nice to finally have some hitters of any persuasion. Even if they wind up in LF or 1B.

It sure seems like several guys need to be promoted (Brown, Bochy, Harrold, Murray, Duvall, Thomas). I'd love to know what the FO's thinking on this is.
