Game Wrap 5/28/2011: BrewCrew 3 Giants 2

Jonathan Sanchez pitched well enough to win, but the offense didn't produce anything until the 8'th inning, too little too late. The BrewCrew ultimately won the game on a suicide squeeze walkoff in the 9'th ininng. Key LInes:

Jonathan Sanchez- 7 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 3.38. Gotta take the bad with the good. Way too many walks, but dude is so hard to hit it's still a good line, a winning line with an average offense. The maddening thing is, if he could cut down on the walks he might be an elite pitchers instead of merely very good. Then again, the cost of cutting the walks might be to make him more hittable.

Sergio Romo- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.76. Remind me again why Romo isn't the 8'th inning guy every game with the LOOGY's used only before inning #8?

The loss dropped the Giants lead in the NL West to just 0.5 games over the Dangerous D'Backs who bombed the 'Stros 11-3. The Reeling Rockies crushed the Cards 15-4 to move up to 3 games behind. The Padres won their game over the Nats 2-1 while the Dodgers are still in progress trailing the Marlins.

Matt Cain takes the mound in the rubber game of the 3 game series tomorrow against Yovani Gallardo who is pitching well and thus yet another candidate to shut down the Giants offense.

  1. Is it just me or did almost every batter start off with either 0-2 or 1-2 counts. I am sick of seeing our guys hacking on the first pitch. Bam Bam is obviously not teaching much patience. Our hitters are not good enougj to be hacking at everything. We need to be seeing more pitches and getting more walks. The next time I see someone popping up with a 3-0 count I am going to explode. The only person I feel safe with swinging on that count is Freddy. Everyone else should take the walk.

Why the hell did Bochy let Mota implode? First of all I would much rather have Wilson pitch an inning or two if it is tied. Second, we should have taken him out when Braun and Fielder got on to switch things up. Bochy isn't using that big head of his. We have lost 4 of 5 and things are looking bad post-Posey. Time for Miggy to have a seat and start Crawford and Burriss at SS and 3B respectively. Burrell is absolutely horrible despite that single last night. Belt should be starting at least 4 games a week otherwise he should be in Fresno.

  2. Roger,

I tend to agree with most of that.

I know conventional wisdom is you don't use your closer in a tie game on the road, but Bochy has done it in the past....and gotten criticized for it. It can be argued both ways. I do agree that Mota should have come out of a tie game after two runners got on base in a tie game. Splashing Pumpkins had a good point that Romo only threw 8 pitches in the 8'th innning. Maybe he should have stayed in to pitch the 9'th too? Part of the problem is that 3 LH relievers may be one too many. Maybe with Casilla up for Runzler, Bochy will have more options. We all know the man loves to have options!

I agree it's time to shake up the lineup, at least temporarily. Nate hits LHP's about as well as RHP's. He needs to be the every day RF. Torres doesn't hit much from the right side, but he can still draw a walk and steal a base. That's more than Rowand is doing now. Torres needs to be in their against both RHP's and LHP's. That leaves LF where I think Belt needs to play, at least against RHP's for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

Burriss may not have the arm for either SS or 3B, but if Crawford is going to be up, might as well see what he can do with the bat. He's probably the best defensive option at SS at worst.

I'd like to see a trade for Ryan Doumit as long as it doesn't cost a top tier prospect. Maybe some combination of Gillaspie, Adrianza, Tanner, Monell and Surkamp?

  3. DrB,

I think Surkamp could be a decent 4th or 5th starter in 2-3 years but you can get rid of any if the others.
