Game Wrap 5/19/2011: Giants 3 Dodgers 1

The Giants almost let a sparkling effort by Madison Bumgarner go for naught in the 9'th inning tonight, but a diving catch by Nate Schierholtz in right field saved the game. Key Lines:

Freddy Sanchez- 1 for 4, SF. BA= .276. Freddy drove in 2 of the Giants 3 runs with a sac fly to drive in Madison Bumgarner who had doubled in the 3'rd and a 2 out basehit to score Miggy Tejada from 3B.

Aubrey Huff- 0 for 5. Huff hit at least 3 balls hard enough to be hits but they were right at fielders.

Buster Posey- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, HBP. BA= .277.

Miguel Tejada- 2 for 4, SB(2). BA= .221 Miggy is hitting .287 over his last 10 games. Unfortunately, his OBP is .287 over the same span.

Madison Bumgarner- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 S. BA= .188. Can the kid handle the bat, or what?

Madison Bumgarner- 8.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.71. Bum looked like he was out there playing a leisurely game of darts. He was in complete command, but couldn't quite get that last out. He than had to wait out one of Brian Wilson's patented torture sessions before Nate saved the game with diving grab off the grass tips in RF off the bat of Jamey Carroll with the bases loaded.

The Win kept the Giants in first place by 0.5 games over the Rockies who rode Jason Giambi's 3 dingers to a win over the Phillies. The Dangerous D'Backs edged the Braves 2-1 to move into 2'nd place 4 games off the pace while the Dodgers loss bumped them down to 4'th place, 5 games behind. The Pesky Padres edged the BrewCrew 1-0 to remain 5.5 games behind the Giants in last place.

The Giants now come home to face the crosstown rival Oakland A's with Ryan Vogelsong getting another chance to impress facing Oakland's ace Trevor Cahill.

  1. your comments from last night are hilarious...the doc upset at bochy??? i was beside myself with laughter

madbum, when in total control of his pitches and his temper is amazing to watch...his delivery is just so smooth

nate's catch was even more amazing as the ball began to tail away from him...after he left his feet

wilson doesnt look right and it may take him through june, with no more dings, to get totally healthy

as an aside...the dodgers have started doing what the og giants at the stick used to do...announce paid attendance and not the true gate...they announced 36k for last night....there was maybe half that...announced 34 k for tonight....no friggin way

the mccourts, the bums bad play, the violence at the park...its like a perfect storm....and i dont think that they draw anywhere near 3mil this season

  2. Aubrey got a little good contact tonight (at least into the Giants dugout), but he's still rolling his wrist over, swinging way too soon, dribbling weak grounders. His timing, for the most part, is still off.

Used to be, way back when, the AL announced paid attendance, the NL announced turnstiles. Always liked the NL for that. Tell me who's here, not who paid and stayed home. But, for quite a while now, NL has been announcing paid. And yeah, I've never seen such small crowds for a Giants game in LA.

You see they showed the A's ERA during the game tonight: 2.68

    Wow

  3. Hello Doc, I remember when Nate Schierholtz and Delmon Young were in the minors that you were making a case for Nate, nobody was talking about, comparing him to Delmon, everybody was talking about.

So after 5 years in the majors, who do you prefer in the outfield and which one have the brightest future in the game Delmon Young or Nate Schierholtz ?

  4. Bacci,

I call 'em like I see 'em. I think Bochy got it wrong in the first game. Doesn't mean I think he should be fired or is a bad manager.

    GIP,

Yeah, I remember getting a lot of grief over on John Sickels' site for saying that Nate was at least as good a prospect as Ian Stewart of the Rockies. Don't remember the Delmon Young comp, but I wouldn't trade Nate straight up for Young right now.

  5. Maybe I am wrong with the comp, or maybe that was Bacci who had done it, that was a long time ago. Still, I think the Giants got a good value with this 2nd round Draft pick that year (not so much with the first round ones). Nate is an example of a hard worker who can succeed even if he is not as gifted as other guys.
I can think of a player like Culberson who could have a similar pro career path.

On another topic, do you have any news from Neal, I thought his injury was not supposed to be too serious?

  6. No news on Neal. I think it's a shoulder issue which is kind of concerning because he had a lot of shoulder trouble early in his career and it significantly delayed his development.

  7. One more comment on Nate. GIP makes a great point about his value as a 2'nd round draft pick. A lot of people who look at thing superficially would not count Nate as a successful draft pick. He probably wouldn't be as a first rounder, but as a second rounder it's a whole different story. IMO, it's very important for teams to find complementary talent in the rounds after the first round. Yeah, you will occasionally find a star player late in the draft, almost by chance, but teams can really help themselves by scouting and drafting role players in rounds 2 and on.

If you look at what happens to the typical 2'nd round draft pick, Nate has already done more than the average even if his career ended tomorrow. If he simply keeps doing what he's currently doing for a 10-12 year MLB career, he will easily be in the top 10% of 2'nd round draft picks. If he keeps on improving and getting more PT, he will eventually be considered an excellent selection in the 2'nd round.

He's also a great example of how defensive skills can increase the WAR value of a player. What's so great about Nate is even a lot of casual fans have figured out how valuable his defense is and love him for it.
