Down on the Farm: 5/7//2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies smacked the Tucson Padres 7-3:

Andres Torres(CF)- 1 for 4, HR, BB. BA= .182.
Mark DeRosa(3B)- 1 for 4. BA= .250.
Brandon Belt(RF)- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .444.
Andrew Kown(RHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 3.71.
Steve Edlefsen(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.41.

Torres and DeRosa rehabbing. Belt keeps doing his thing.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Altoona Curve 5-0:

Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .243.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 2 for 4, HBP. BA= .292.
Juan Perez(CF)- 3 for 4, 2B, HBP, SB(3). BA= .241.
Eric Surkamp(LHP)- 6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 10 K's. ERA= 1.65.

Surkamp keeps producing dominant starts. Is he the guy who will make Sanchez expendable?

A+ Bakersfield Blaze edged the San Jose Giants 6-5:

Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(18), Assist. BA= .358.
Hector Sanchez(C)- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .259.
Luke Anders(DH)- 1 for 4, HR(5). BA= .293.
Ryan Lollis(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .289.
Kelvin Marte(LHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.51.

OK, I'm convinced! Brown is just toying with the Cal League now. Time to move him up to Richmond and challenge him a bit.

Loq A Augusta Greenjackets lost a pitcher's duel to the West Virginia Power 1-0:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 3 for 4, SB(11). BA= .288.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.86
Edward Concepcion(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.02.

Rogers was the hard luck loser. Concepcion, except for one horrible outing, has pitched very well out of the bullpen.

  2. Surkamp still needs to cut down on the walks. I wonder does he walk guys because he's too fine and the hitters are much more patient or does he walk guys because he can be wild sometimes?

  3. Almost all pitchers whose primary pitch is the curveball are going to walk some batters. If thrown properly, it's a very difficult pitch to hit, but it's also very hard to keep in the strike zone. I think umps have a hard time calling them right too because of so much movement.
