Down on the Farm: 5/5//2011

AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the 8'th inning for a come-from-behind win over the Fresno Grizzlies:

Andres Torres(CF)- 0 for 3, BB.
Tyler Graham(LF-CF)- 3 for 4, S. BA= .284.
Brandon Belt(RF-LF)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .462.
Brett Pill(2B)- 3 for 5. BA= .347.
Tyler LaTorre(C)- 2 for 2, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .444.
Matt Yourkin(LHP)- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 5.40.
Steve Edlefsen(RHP)- 0.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 0 K's. ERA= 4.70.

Andres Torres would seem to be about ready to rejoin the Giants. It will be interesting to see how the OF shakes out once he comes back. I'm not necessarily expecting Torres to tear it up for awhile. It will probably be like spring training except all the opposing players are in mid-season form. Love that Pill is playing 2B. A fringy hitter at 1B could be a major offensive force at 2B if he can handle the position. Edlefsen's sinker must not have been sinking in the rarified air of Colorado Springs.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels split a doubleheader with the New Britain Rock Cats:

Game 1: Cats 2 Squirrels 1:

Nick Noonan(SS)- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .228.
Clayton Tanner(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.85.

Game 2: Squirrels 7 Cats 4:

Justin Christian(LF)- 1 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .278.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2), BB. BA= .246.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 2 for 5, SB(2). BA= .283.
Ryan Verdugo(LHP)- 3.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.16.
Dan Otero(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.33.
Jason Stoffel(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 2.61.
Justin Dowdy(LHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.87.

Nice day for Nick Noonan with 3 XBH's and a walk in 8 plate appearances. Dowdy is a 27 yo minor league phase Rule 5 pickup. He's really sparkled in a Jack-of-all-Trades role for the Flying Squirrels.

A+ Visalia Rawhide edged the San Jose Giants 6-5:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 5, HR(2). BA= .321.
Cavan, Sanchez, Fairley- 2 hits each.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 3 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.63.
Hector Correa(RHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.95.
Chris Wilson(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.35.

Brown shows a bit of power. Giants pitchers K 12 in 9 IP.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets held of a late rally by the West Virginia Power to hold onto a 7-6 win:

Jeff Arnold(C)- 3 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .246.
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .299.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 11/1. ERA= 4.74.
Gaspar Santiago(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.80.
Stephen Harrold(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(2). ERA= 1.64.

Gotta be encouraged by The RafRod's performance so far. Maybe Santiago is a prospect? He's got 17 K's in 15 IP, but also has 12 BB's He's 21 yo.

  1. i think they are gonna keep torres in fresno for the entire weekend series....which is good for torres, and good for the grizzlies (steak dinner every night)

when he comes back, they will probably send him to a corner, especially since ross is still not hitting

i listened in when edelfson threw...he had nothing tonite...it happenes

  2. Edlefsen lives and dies by the sinker, and sinkers don't always sink at 5000 ft elevation or whatever CO Springs is at.

  3. It seems that Wendell Fairley is this year's recipient of the now-annual Culberson Bounce(tm). It will be interesting to see if his renaissance continues through the dog days of summer.

Maybe we need to get Justin Dowdy up to Fresno a.s.a.p?

  4. Interesting about Pill. They say he was another great defensive first baseman and right handed, so one wonders why this thought never occurred to anyone before. He's listed at 6'4" and 210 lbs. Cal Ripkin played shortstop at 6'4" and 220; Tulowitzki is 6'3" 215. Anybody ever hear of similarly tall second basemen?

  5. Kent was a big guy... The Giants tried JCP at 2B in '09, so they are not averse to trying thing with big potential payoffs (moving Panda to 3B would qualify as well).
