Down on the Farm: 5/29/2011

AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox crushed the Fresno Grizzlies 24-6:

Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .290.
Thomas Neal(LF)- 1 for 4, BB. BA= .351.
Travis Ishikawa(RF)- 3 for 3, 2B. BA= .267.
Brad Eldred(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .309.
James Simmons(RF)- 2 for 2. BA= .400.
Ydwin Villegas(P)- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 9.00.

I hadn't noticed James Simmons in the Fresno box scores before today. Yes, THAT Ydwin Villegas! First appearance for the Grizzlies and it's on the MOUND!

AA Akron Aeros edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1:

Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 2 for 3, HR(2). BA= .239.
Eric Surkamp(LHP)- 8 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 11/4.

Nothing to add here.

A+ San Jose Giants blanked the Stockton Ports 2-0:

Zack Wheeler(RHP)- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 12 K's. ERA= 3.70.
Ari Ronick(LHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(1). ERA= 2.08.

A dominating start by Zack Wheeler!

Low A Rome Braves topped the Augusta Greenjackets 4-1:

Devin Harris(RF)- 1 for 2, 2B, HBP. BA= .232.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.00.
Edward Concepcion(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.74.

Not much offense in Augusta. Kickham not quite as sharp as his first 3 starts. Concepcion continues to be decent out of the pen.

Thanks to Optioned to Fresno for the heads up on the DSL starting. I missed the first game last night. The DSL Giants did not play today. I will include them in my regular Down On the Farm posts from now on.

  1. dsl starts before ss?

and the wind at sky sox stadium was blowing out to left at 23 mph...thats insane

seems that all the sky sox did was get the ball in the air and let the wind do the rest...not sure why that didnt work for the grizzlies

  2. Thanks for the hat tip. The DSL starting caught me by surprise too. I saw it on the minor lines on McCovey Chronicles, and it looks like they just began their season yesterday. Looking forward to it!

What a weird day in Fresno. First off, I didn't even know Ydwin Villegas was up from extended spring training, but he was up to Fresno! He hasn't hit very well in Augusta, so I wonder why the Giants brought him up. It may just be a case of the GM saying "All the other roster spots are booked, short season hasn't started yet, and we have no where else to put it himfor right now." I don't think Villegas is converting to pitcher anytime soon, but he was probably used because it was a laugher, and they didn't want to waste bullpen arms in a 24-6 game.

Another weird sighting: Aaron King! Again, thought he would start they year in short season or Single A, but here he is with the Grizzlies. Unfortunately, after today's outing, I don't know how long he'll stay in Triple-A. Sigh...I liked him a lot, but it just seems he hasn't gotten his control problems solved.

  3. I saw the name King and it didn't click that it was Aaron King. I figured it was some guy they signed out of indy ball or something. Makes sense now. I forgot what his line was but it wasn't very good. Probably should throw any stats from this game out the window anyway.
