Down on the Farm: 5/20/2011

AAA New Orleans Zephyrs blanked the Fresno Grizzlies 2-0:

Shane Loux- 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.61.
Henry Sosa- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 9.55.

Shouldn't a guy named Loux be pitching for New Orleans? Just when you think Sosa is finished, he comes out a throws a couple of very good innings.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Reading Phillies 4-3:

Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 2 for 4, 3B, HR(1). BA= .220.
Justin Fitzgerald(RHP)- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.67.
Jason Stoffel(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(6). ERA= 3.94.

Kieschnick is hitting .310 with a .500 SLB% over his last 10 games.

A+ San Jose Giants crushed the Modesto Nuts again 9-1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3, HR(4), 2 BB. BA= .377.
Hector Sanchez(C)- 2 for 5, HR(5). BA= .298.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .287.
Tommy Joseph(DH)- 2 for 5. BA= .224.
Kelvin Marte(LHP)- 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.59.

Not only is Gary Brown hitting like he did in college, he's drawing walks too, which he didn't do in college. He's even flashing a bit of power here and there. Is this Hector Sanchez' breakout season? He's hitting .356 with a SLG% of .556 over his last 10 games. He seems to be doing most of the catching lately too.

Low A Charleston River Dogs downed the Augusta Greenjackets 4-2:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP. BA= .294.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 1 for 3, HR(11), BB. BA= .261.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.59.

Duvall has 6 dingers in his last 10 games with a line of .289/.400/.789. His season SLG% is .515. Augusta is not an easy park to hit HR's in either.

  1. really gotta listen to evans tomorrow morning

want to hear how they are approaching the minors this season'

seems to me that more than a few guys deserve a bump come the break

i just have a feeling that they are gonna take their time with some

i also have a feeling that either during this season, or in the offseason, hinshaw will be given his outright

its the 21st....10 days to big decision day for kroon....and there are lots of teams that need arms

  2. I'm a sucker for the feel-good stories. I hope the Giants find a way move Kroon up. Even though he hasn't been lights out in Fresno, he wouldn't be the worst guy in the Giants pen right now.

  3. Ryan Vogelsong isn't enough feel-good for you in one season? I was really intrigued by the Kroon story in spring training and was rooting for him. I just don't think he's shown enough to get the callup, not with Santiago Casilla in line ahead of him. It does seem like Hinshaw's days on the 40 man roster are rapidly running out.

  4. Anyone for seeing Gary Brown and Carlos Willoughby move up? How great would it be to see Brown be this year's Belt by moving up 2 levels. I could see Willoughby be our leadoff hitter of the future with his consistent hitting and basestealing but I wish he could hack it at SS. That is where our system really lacks hitting.

  5. I have a feeling you are right about Sanchez. He was always a serious prospect, but this year, he has over-taken Monell and ToJo to take over the top CATCHING prospect in the org. ToJo may be a better prospect, overall, though.

I also agree that Kroon is done with the org, and by no fault of his own. The Giants bully is too dominate and one of the better pieces is ripe to rejoin any day now. Nice run, Kroon. You did EVERYTHING you could have done. There just were no open doors or windows for you to sneak in through.

I am REALLY excited to see Brown in Richmond. He is not a power hitter, so he should thrive in AA. I think it would be a better test for him as well. Put him in the cold and 3K miles away. Test the kids mental resolve.

  6. Hey Doc, any word on Gillaspie's injury?

  7. I see Gary Brown as our future leadoff hitter: Willoughby can be my #2 hitter then. :^)

I think Gary Brown would love to return to the East Coast and rake, he played in Cape Cod league for two seasons and did very well there in his second season there, though he was OK in OBP his first season.

He's a very loose and down-to-earth guy from what I've heard in interviews. I think he can handle anything, he was open to changing that dance of a batting stance that he had in college, that would test any kid's resolve, I think, having to change your mechanics which got you here.
