Down on the Farm: 5/19/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs 6-2:

Tyler Graham(CF)- 2 for 4, SB(17). BA= .243.
Brandon Belt(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(4). BA= .380.
Brett Pill(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .316.
Brad Eldred(RF)- 2 for 4, HR(5), SB(5). BA= .349.
Josh Banks(RHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.68.
Santiago Casilla(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

I'll take a point or two off the OBP and BA for a HR from Belt. He did make an error at 1B. The Brett Pill 2B experiment is back on. Casilla is getting closer.

AA Bowie Baysox outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2 in 16 innings:

Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 6, 2B, BB. BA= .264.
Roger Kieschnick(LF-RF)- 2 for 7, SB(4).
Eric Surkamp(LHP)- 7.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.76.
Dan Otero(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.69.
Ronnie Ray(RHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.99.

A+ San Jose Giants smashed the Modesto Nuts 9-2:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 4, 3B, BB, 2 SB(25). BA= .378.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 0 for 2, 3 BB. BA= .250. OBP= .370.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .274.
Wendell Fairley(LF)- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .298.
David Mixon(RHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.27.
Chuck Lofgren(LHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA- 0.00.

Brown continues to terrorize the Cal League. Parker seems to be another extreme plate discipline guy, or is is timidity? I guess it's good to have some of these guys scattered through the organization. They used to be non-existent.

Low A Greenville Drive edged the Augusta Greenjackets 6-5 in 11 innings:

Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 6, HR(10). BA= .259.
Ryan Scoma(1B)- 2 for 5, HR(3). BA= .248.
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 2 for 5. BA= .277.
Raynor Campbell(CF)- 1 for 4, HR(5). BA= .252.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 3 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.08.
Gaspar Santiago(LHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.32.
Jacob Dunnington(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.55.
Drew Bowlin(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.52.

Disappointing start for Rosin. Dominant outing by Dunnington.

  1. the first guy to get a hit off of banks was joe thurston...talk about a sad case

i remember seeing him for the first time in 02 with the dodgers...i thought he was a sure thing....good glove, great speed, good bat...he just never panned out and is now an org guy...making an ok living in aaa...most likely never to get back to the bigs

dont tell me that pill isnt interesting other clubs...and if belt is back at first, is it possible that the rumors of an attempt to move huff to third might be true?

think the guys from sj are getting a bit tired trying to hit in the eastern? hoooboy

surkamp with not overwhelming stuff...but seems he is still on track

rosin is still working his way back from tj...right?

  2. I don't think Rosin has been injured. He was worked very hard in last year's college campaign so the Giants shut him down early. He missed a start or two early in the season due to a family illness or something like that.

  3. Not convinced that Pill at second base is not desperation over experimentation. His time at second coincides with Burriss in the majors and injuries to Bond and Gillespie. But, hey, I'm all about finding out if this guy can play another position.

  4. the idea that being selective at the plate and taking walks is in any way 'timid' is just ridiculous. that would make one barry bonds the most 'timid' hitter of all time. or babe ruth. or ted williams.

the bottom line is that belt had a bad month to start his pro career so your entire view of his patient approach did a 180.

    lame.

  5. Anon, Belt also has a below average strikeout rate. Bonds/Ruth/etc didn't K a lot. If Belt was smacking homers his K's would be fine, but he's not.

Gives the impression of someone watching a third strike pass by, which is what we saw in the bigs.
We already know he has a good eye, that's not why he's back in AAA. Cut the K's or start getting balls over the fence, it's Fresno.

  6. Anon,

You have to distinguish between being "selective" and being pitched around. A huge percentage of Barry Bonds' walks came because pitchers simply refused to throw him anything near the strike zone. Belt isn't getting that same respect. He's letting a lot of hittable pitches go by which is something Bonds almost never did.

  7. A couple of transaction notes: Koshansky released from Richmond and Edlefsen to the DL.
