Game Wrap 4/16/2011: Giants 5 D'Backs 3

The Giants played a game that was both frustrating and very entertaining. They ended up winning it due mostly to an exceptional effort by Guillermo Mota and the bullpen, and they overcame 5 GIDP's! Key lines:

Aaron Rowand- 3 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .359. Gamer was as good this game as he was bad yesterday. The first hit to lead off the game was a thing of beauty, a long, low line drive up the left-center alley that Chris Young could not get to.

Freddy Sanchez- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .308. Freddy drove in 3 runs with his 2 hits. He's smacking the ball pretty good right now.

Buster Posey- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB. BA= .306. My wife was watching the game with me and had just commented on how nice Buster's swing looked....Bam! She looked at me and said, "see, I told you!"

Mark DeRosa- 2 for 3. BA= .429. DeRosa has no place to play. He got the call at 1B against the LHP today. He has a very reasonable contract and may have some trade value.

Darren Ford- 0 for 1, PO/CS. Ford entered the game as a pinch runner, got picked off first base running on first move and almost beat the relay from the first baseman. Later, he struck out in his first career MLB AB.

Barry Zito- 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 6.23. It was pretty obvious that Zito didn't have it before he sprained his foot fielding a bunted ball on the fly. The first two outs of the first inning were smoked, and he certainly wasn't fooling anyone in the second inning. Hate to say it, but I doubt the Giants win this game if Zito hadn't gotten hurt.

Guillermo Mota- 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.19. Mota exceeded his previous career high IP total, I think by a full inning. He actually seemed to get stronger and more unhittable as the appearance progressed. My goodness! He as throwing some nasty breaking pitches in the 5'th and 6'th innings! An exceptional effort! Maybe he can be the emergency starter if Zito goes on the DL?

Jeremy Affeldt- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.00. A nice effort by Affeldt to back up Mota's performance.

Sergio Romo- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K. ERA= 0.00. Romo's slider seemed to have almost supernatural qualities tonight. After getting the last out, he let out a yell and jabbed his finger at the sky as he always does. Ryan Roberts took exception, started yelling at Romo and seemed to be looking for a fight until the ump and a coach got in his line of vision to Romo.

Brian Wilson- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 9.64. Wilson is making it look too easy. I kind of miss the torture. He now has what I consider the holy grail of fastballs, 4 seamer, 2 seamer and cutter. Add in a slider to the mix and he is truly unhittable.

The W moved the Giants record to 8-6 and to 3 games behind NL West leading Colorado Rockies who finally lost a game to the Cubs 8-3. Meanwhile the Dodger are getting pounded by the Cardinals again, 9-2 in the 9'th inning. Kershaw lasted less than 5 IP. Don Mattingly is already second guessing himself and being second guessed about how many pitches he lets his starters throw. Kershaw threw 111 in his 4.2 IP after throwing 117 in his last start. This on the heels of Hiroki Kuroda getting shelled in his last start after throwing 117 in his prior start. Not sure I blame Mattingly given how lousy the Dodgers bullpen is. Kuo is now on the DL again. This time with a bad back. Now there is talk that if Frank McCourt cannot get some type of financial rescue package put together, the Dodgers might not make their next payroll. Oh, and the LA Times reported today that the Dodgers made deep cuts in their security budget in 2009. Man, what an embarrassment for one of the sport's historical flagship franchises!

Madison Bumgarner tries for the sweep tomorrow against Barry Enright. Bumgarner has had success against the D'Backs. Enright kind of baffled the Giants in an early start last year but he has poor K/BB numbers and the Giants seemed to figure him out in a subsequent game.

  1. I thought Zito was pulling a Jonathan like last years playoff. He knew he didn't have it so an "injury" might save face.

Just thinking... A pitcher warming up knows if he is on or not that day. Imagine getting ready to come into the seventh game of a WS with the bases loaded and you can't locate in warmups or your mechanics don't feel right. If he's knows he is off when a reliever gets to the mound to take the ball, does he hand the manager a small pistol with one round?

  2. giants won cuz zito went down

lets face it...if he cant get the punch and judy hitters on the snakes out...he cant get anyone out

he is done...and no amount of zen philosophy is gonna get him back

please explain to me why barry bonds had to go to trial...but bud selig has never been questioned regarding his supporting the sale of the dodgers to the mccourts....there was always something fishy there

the fans in dodger town are starting to rebel...heard that the park was half empty friday night...im sure tonite was worse

and mattingly is gonna destroy a few arms this season....huzzah

  3. A couple notes about the game...

First, Saunders move on Ford on the CS was a balk. His leg went to about 4:45 - 5:00 on BOTH pickoff attempts. I was surprised there was no mention of this by Kruk and Kuip.

Second, the whole thing between Romo and Roberts, I think was a continuation of the AB. Roberts called two time outs against Romo and on the second one, Romo stayed in his stance and quick-pitched Roberts once he got in the box. Roberts was trying to get in Romo's head and Romo won the battle. Roberts was just gash-hurt about it.

  4. Sorry, have to just make a comment on the Dodgers. Apologies for that:

While the Dodgers are in heavy damage control from the Bryan Stow beating, the first official comment immediately following the attack, from the Dodgers was:

“It is extremely unfortunate that this incident took place on what was otherwise a great day at Dodger Stadium for tens of thousands of fans.”

    --Josh Rawitch and Frank McCourt

    It just makes me sick.

They had reduced security, removed uniformed cops. Cut the number of cops and dressed them polo shirts. And cut the cops' pay. And when a fan is severely beaten, there is almost no concern. Just a canned marketing statement.

I read the article that you reference from the LA Times, and I am surprised, by the "Oh my goodness, 50 cops a game will cost HOW much???" attitude:

    50 cops a game at $50 and hour x 6 hours = $15,000

    x 81 games = $1,215,000.

And all I can say is, is that all? Think of it this way:

Dodgers average 40,000 fans a game. So, we're looking at, what, 33 cents per fan to have decent stadium security. Are you KIDDING ME????

Considering that ticket prices have to average a minimum of $25. Parking must be another $15, 33 cents a fan seems like nothing.

Look at the big pictur: Dogdger payroll (including staff, etc.) has to exceed $100,000,000. McCort doesn't want to pay a million dollars to ensure fan safety?

That used to be one of the best organizations in baseball. It's a joke now.

It will be interesting to see if Selig is able to force that pig McCort out before the Fox $$$ comes in. (Love to see Dodger paychecks bounce!)

    OK, back to the Giants:

Zito must go, DeRosa needs 300-400 ABs.

  5. I see the comments section is in mid-season form.

I did not notice the back and forth between Roberts and Romo, but that explains a lot. Good for Romo! I bet Roberts will think twice before stepping out of the box against Romo next time....and what's with the gangsta tattoos all over Roberts arms? I know Wilson has tattoos too, and I don't particularly like them, but Roberts is ridiculous. How does anybody think that looks good....and do they realize those things are on there for life? Whenever I see arm tattoos covering the whole arm like that, I can't help but think they're meant to cover something up, if you know what I mean. Not saying they are, but that's what pops into my head.

I did notice one D'Backs pitcher holding the ball a long time trying to get Rowand(I think it was Rowand) to step out of the box and start his routine over. Gamer just stayed in there and the pitcher finally threw the pitch. One thing I've noticed about this Giants team going back to last year: They are the ones getting into other teams' heads whereas for most of my life as a Giants fan it's been the other way around. That all seems to start with Bochy. Gotta give him some props for that!

    Bacci and Kelly,

Yeah, it's been well documented in official court documents that the McCourts were doing exactly what everybody suspected them of doing, using the Dodgers as their own personal piggy bank. Taking millions upon millions out to support their faux riche lifestyle. This, when every cent they've ever put into the team has been borrowed!

If Selig lets them take a $100 million advance from Fox, the other owners should can Bud. At least half of that $100 M would almost certainly go into Frank's personal financial black hole. Talk about mortgaging the future.....!

  6. mccourt went around selig and got a personal loan from fox

he is solvent for the next month

he says that he will sue the mlb if they do not allow the 200 mil loan from fox

    selig wants mccourt out

question that the players association should ask during negotiations for the next contract...why was mccourt allowed to buy the team in the first place, especially since there was an ownership group that was local to los angeles and had the money

    zito to dl....voglesong up

have a feeling that hinshaw is going off the 40 man

  7. MLB has a good reason to deny the $200 "advance" from Fox. Any prospective future owners would be on the hook for the $200 M. Why would Fox be stupid enough to give McCourt a personal loan when it's obvious he's weeks away from bankruptcy? Oh yeah, it's Fox!

  8. ...er, that's a $200 M advance from Fox.
