With Matt Cain skipping his start due to elbow inflammation and the Giants facing the team that will likely give them their strongest competition for the NL West title, I didn't have much in the way of expectations for this game. The Giants came out and dominated the Rockies for 7 innings before a late Rockies run fell short. Key lines:
Darren Ford- 2 for 4, HR, SB(3). Nice game by Ford who, if he can hit at all, would make a pretty nice #5 OF option for some team.
Nate Schierholtz- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .357. Nate continues to have a quietly effective spring.
Buster Posey- 2 for 2, HR, BB. From Baggs' description, the HR was crushed to CF travelling as far a 450 ft. I think the scouts must have been lulled to sleep because Posey never looks like he's swinging that hard, but he must generate epic bat head speed with his swing.
Mike Fontenot- 3 for 3, 2B. Fontenot played SS with Burriss playing 2B. Interesting.
Emmanuel Burriss- 2 for 3, 3B. BA= .333. It would be nice to have Burriss' speed on the team. The numbers are against him though.
Ryan Vogelsong- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. Vogelsong seems to be a man on mission. Bagg's talked about an almost maniacal workout regimen. Not sure how a guy can kick around like he has and all of a sudden show up to a spring training camp and dominate like this. Did he learn a new pitch? Change his delivery? Some newfound dedication to conditioning? All I can say is the Giants know a thing or two about scouting pitching. Maybe they saw something.
Javier Lopez, Sergio Romo, Matt Yourkin and Henry Sosa all pitched scoreless innings.
The Giants split the squad tomorrow with Jeff Suppan facing the BrewCrew in Scottsdale in the day game and Barry Zito will try to quiet his critics vs the Dodgers in the nightcap.

i dont think zito is trade or dfa bait....but if suppan has another solid outing, and with vogelsong tossing a strong three, if its a repeat of his first game...all the buzz will return

he is never gonna be a superstar...but he is an important cog in what can be a very strong team
kinda impressed with ford today...power and speed is nice...the depth chart is looking better and better as the spring progresses
this really is unlike st's in the past...with so many having truly strong springs...cut days are gonna be tough
Yeah, since it is unlikely Suppan will accept an assignment to Fresno, it's going to be hard to stash him. If he keeps pitching well, he may make himself attractive enough to a team like the Yankees or Cards that they might be willing to sent the Giants a prospect for him.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing Vogelsong pitch on TV during a September callup, must have been in 2000. He looked like he had the makings of a stud pitcher, FB he could pound the zone with and a sharp breaking ball. I know Dusty Baker and Mike Krukow said really good things about him at the time. I was almost sorry to see him go in the Jason Schmidt trade. He was the one guy in that trade I thought might come back to bite us.
ReplyDeleteI think he had TJ and possibly some other arm injuries along the way and never panned out. I'd like to see what his stuff looks like now.
