Down on the Farm: Arizona Fall League 10-18-2010

Surprise Rafters beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 6-4:

Brandon Belt- 0 for 2, 2BB, SB, CS. BA= .368.

Conor Gillaspie- 0 for 3, SF. BA= .063.

Charlie Culberson- 3 for 4, HR(2), 3 E. BA= .474.

Ryan Verdugo- 2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.40.

Culberson is raking, but Yikes! 3 errors in 1 game. Having seen Culberson play several times, I think he can probably play an adequate defense at 2B, but if he makes it, it's going to be with his bat.

  1. Belt with 2 walks. He continues to get on in all sorts of ways. I keep saying he needs another 1/2 season before he will be ready, but he continues to rake at every level. Maybe he could have a job out of ST??

  2. Perhaps. I guess it depends on how the offseason shakes out. If Huff ends up going elsewhere for big bucks, it could crack to door open for competition between Belt and Travis. If they somehow got Dan Uggla to play 3B, I could see Pablo moving over to first too.

  3. After this season, I don't see Panda at 1st any more. Panda at first was always an option because of Panda's bat. With that evaporating, there is no way he sticks at 1st anymore.

  4. With Belt, it's like they used to say about Joe Morgan: He could go 0 for 2 but he would make something good happen by walking, hitting a sac fly, stealing a base, making a key play in the field, etc. If he turns out as hoped Belt would truly be one of the steals of the draft. Kudos to the Giants scouting department.

  5. Don't give up on Panda's bat just yet. It's not as bad as it was this year just like it wasn't as good as it was last year. He does need to get into better shape is he wants a long career, though.
