Game Wrap 09-17-2010: Brewers 3 Giants 0

Short write up tonight. The Giants offense didn't show up for the game. End of story. Key lines:

Madison Bumgarner- 5.2 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.27. It was a struggle all evening for Bumgarner, but his pitching is not the reason the Giants lost this game. On the other hand, he personally snuffed out the only real chance they had at a rally in the 3'rd inning when he bunted way too hard, with runners on first and second with no outs, into a DP.

Randy Wolf- 9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.32. Don't be fooled by the ERA, Wolf has been lights out in September so far. Of all the explanations for the decline in hitting in MLB, IMO, the cut fastball is as good as it gets. It has similar movement as a slider, but with higher velocity, easier to throw and control, and easier to conceal. Wolf had a great little cutter going tonight and the Giants were never able to solve it.

Mat Latos and the Padres got shelled by the Cards 14-4 so the Giants remain 0.5 games ahead in the NL West, but the Rockies are leading the Dodgers late. If that stands up, the Rocks will be just 1.5 games behind the Giants in 3'rd place.

Tim Lincecum takes the mound tomorrow evening against Yovani Gallardo, another hot pitcher, one with ace potential, who has had tough season, but seems to be putting it together in September. This could get rocky, folks!

Go Giants!

  2. I don't feel too sorry for MadBum. He had a chance to help himself a lot by just laying down a sac bunt in the third. He bunted a line drive on one hop to the third baseman for an easy DP. He turned a potential runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with 1 out into runner at 3'rd with 2 outs. At that point, you knew Guillen wasn't going to make it home.

Hopefully that's a learning experience for MadBum. Hopefully he was paying attention to the work of Clayton Kershaw at the plate last series, and Bum will work on his bunting, a lot, over the offseason.

But yeah, I think I've said a couple of times that the Giants are currently waiting on the HR right now. Most HR's come of mistake pitches, so I guess you and I are just saying the same thing in a slightly different way.
