Game Wrap 09-09-2010: Giants 7 Padres 3

Well, the Giants waited for the long ball to score their runs tonight, but they didn't wait long as they peppered the outer reaches of Petco Park with bomb after bomb in support of more dominant pitching from Matt Cain. Key lines:

Andres Torres- 1 for 5, 3B. BA= .272. Torres set the tone for the game by leading off with his seventh triple of the season and coming in to score on Freddy Sanchez' single.

Freddy Sanchez- 3 for 5, SB(3). BA= .289. Freddy drove in the first run with a single, then singled ahead of Huff's 2 run blast in the 3'rd inning.

Aubrey Huff- 3 for 4, 2B(32), HR(24), BB. BA= .293. Huff Daddy has been struggling, but he sure picked a great time to bust out of hit. He was stroking it tonight just like he has all season before the recent slump. I had a pretty strong feeling about this game after his dinger into the sandbox in CF the the 3'rd inning.

Buster Posey- 2 for 5, HR(12). BA= .325. Buster never looks like he's swinging that hard, it's just so effortless, but he must generate tremendous bat speed. This one was a blast into the second deck in LF to drive in Freddy and himself.

Pat Burrell- 2 for 2, HR(17). BA= .253. When Burrell gets in one of his HR tears, he's as good a power hitter as there is anywhere. He's seems to be in one of those right now. This blast ricocheted off the W in the Western Metal Supply sign above the 4'th floor of the brick building down the LF line in Petco, an epic blast!

Juan Uribe- 2 for 2, HR(20), 2 BB. BA= .248. Talk about getting hot and carrying a team. Not that Uribe is the only one getting it done, but my goodness, is he dialed in right now, or what?

Matt Cain- 8 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 3.19. The final line does not do justice to Cain's performance tonight as he came out to try for a complete game only to give up a single to the pesky David Eckstein and a 2 run HR to Ryan Ludwick. Take those two hits away and his line becomes 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K's. Dominant!

Kevin Correia- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.46. Looks like Correia has tumbled all the way out of the Padres starting rotation to mop up duty.

With the W, the Giants move to 1 game behind the Padres for the NL West lead. The Colorado Rockies beat the Cincinnati Reds once again, this time coming from a 5 run deficit to win 6-5 with Chris Nelson's steal of home in the 8'th inning proving to be the winning run. The Win left the Rockies just 3.5 games behind the Padres and 2.5 games behind the Giants. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves lost to the Cardinals 11-4 and losing ground to 1 game ahead of the Giants in the Wild Card race.

Jonathan Sanchez goes against Clayton Richard in a battle of lefthanders that holds the promise of an epic pitching duel, but not quite as epic as Mat Latos vs Tim Lincecum on Sunday.

  3. What a game! Go Giants!

Now Sanchez can back up his statement before the last series by shutting them down tonight.

  4. Oh yeah, can you believe that the Rockies won on a steal of home? And that was Nelson's first steal in majors? I wish my old keeper league was still around, I traded for Nelson at some point.

As nice a feeling I have about the team, I am getting more and more scared about Colorado.
