Down on the Farm: 09-06-2010

We come to the last day of the 2010 minor league season except for the San Jose Giants who once again are in the Cal League playoffs.

AAA Fresno Grizzlies out hit the Tacoma Rainiers 9-6:

Eugenio Velez- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .302.
Emmanuel Burriss- 2 for 5. BA= .282.
Jesus Guzman- 4 for 5, 2B, 3B. BA= .321.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 5, HR(4). BA= .229.
Tony Pena- 3 for 4. BA= .385.
Waldis Joaquin- 3 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.93.
Joe Paterson- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.48
Brandon Medders- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.46.

I'm betting Velez gets a call up tonight. He left the game early for a PH. Burriss would be a handy pair of legs to have on the bench for the stretch run too. Guzman finishes strong. Will he ever get a MLB shot? It would seem like his chances are dwindling down. Nice to see Belt finish on an up note to a great season. Tony Pena played SS today. Is he in the mix for the Giants job next year? It's looking mighty desperate! Paterson has been dominant of late: 1-0, 0.79, 11.1 IP, 2 BB, 15 K's in his last 10 appearances.

Richmond Flying Squirrels edged the Bowie Baysox 4-3:

Rafael Cova- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's ERA= 2.35.

Not much else to see here. Thomas Neal came out of a game early a few days ago and never returned to the lineup. Hope it isn't a serious injury. I found a Richmond newspaper article from yesterday that quoted Thomas Neal in a couple of places. Although it talked about several Richmond players missing time with injuries, there was no mention of an injury to Neal, so I assume he's OK.

High A San Jose Giants pounded the Visalia Rawhide 9-5:

Francisco Peguero- 1 for 3, SB(40). BA= .329.
Jose Flores- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .331.
Brandon Crawford- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .167.
Drew Biery- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B, BB. BA= .249.
Jorge Bucardo- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.42.

Very nice season for Peguero. Disappointing season for Biery. Some improvement from Bucardo who is still transitioning to this level. I was reading about Dodger prospect Ethan Martin's struggles and the comment was made that many teams don't want their best pitching prospects exposed to the Cal League. The Giants have not avoided it with their pitching prospects and for the most part they have done well. I think they need the challenge. It's the PCL I'm not so sure about, especially for sinkerball types.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds 7-2:

Nick Liles- 1 for 4, SB(29). BA= .316.
Chris Dominguez- 1 for 4, HR(21). BA= .272.
Tommy Joseph- 2 for 4. BA= .236.
Luke Anders- 1 for 4, HR(14). BA= .285.
Hector Sanchez- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .274.
Andy Reichard- 8 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.39.
Jose Casilla- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.16.

Liles really turned on the afterburners on the basepaths at the end of the season. He hit .378 with 5 SB's in his last 10 games. I wonder if Chris Dominguez could help the SJ Giants in their playoffs. He's really hot right now.

Short Season: The NWL regular season ended yesterday with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes missing the playoffs for the first time in years. They had a lot of young players on the team this year, especially in the starting pitching and it cost them. It might be good for the long term health of the organization though.

Rookie AZL: The Giants made the playoffs, but were eliminated by the Reds.

DSL: The Giants won the DSL championship.

  1. hope decker stays with the org and i hope that i am right about the org looking for him to take over when bochy goes. he did a great job with the team until the very last 2 weeks of the season.

felt kinda out of it this year when it comes to the minors, without gb's or greg's blogs

hope the giants can sign a long term with richmond...they have a very strong and loyal fan base

as an aside, i hope the org brings up greenwald to do a few weekend games during the final month...still surprised that he is still working the minors

  3. Dear DrB, thank you so much for your blog this season/ I am stuck down here in NC with DirecTV and computer to follow my Giants. I go back to the '51 Jints and the Polo Grounds. Had dinner with Bobby Thomson am a total baseball addict. As an organization the minor league teams were 33 games over .500 and rather mediocre. One thing to note, Augusta had the best overall record in the Southern Division for the second year in a row, and for the second year in a row did not make the playoffs. Good overall season. Fresno had a huge lead early but losing Posey and Bum to the big club made them mediocre. BBelt was unbelievable until he tired in August. He is the real deal. I noticed they started playing him in the outfield a few games at Fresno. Neal had a pretty good season with little help in the lineup before Belt came up. Charlie Culberson really blossomed at San Jose. I am very excited about young Tommie Joseph. Noonan continues to disappoint. Wheeler had a bit of a shaky first season, not in MadBum's league at all. So, in summary, the organization has few pitchers with high upsides, 2010 draft is a question mark, but we do have some position players with an upside.
