Down on the Farm: 09-02-2010

AAA Salt Lake City Bees defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 3-1:

Eugenio Velez- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .297.
Brett Pill- 2 for 4. BA= .274.
Ben Copeland- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .280.
Matt Yourkin- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.24.
Brandon Medders- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.88.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels soared over the Erie Sea Dogs 14-0:

Thomas Neal- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .291.
Conor Gillaspie- 4 for 5, HR(7). BA= .295.
Clay Timpner- 3 for 5. BA= .291.
Juan Ciriaco- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2). BA= .242.
Mike MacDonald- 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.90.
Mitch Lively- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.02.
Rafael Cova- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.44.

Conor Gillaspie has had a pretty good year, but with little power and no speed he's going to need to hit about .320 to stick as a corner IF in the majors. Does he have 1 option left before the Giants have to keep him in the majors or make him available on waivers?

High A San Jose Giants held off the Inland Empire 66'ers, who scored 4 runs in the last 2 innings, 8-7:

Francisco Peguero- 3 for 4, HR(10). BA= .322.
Charlie Culberson- 1 for 4, HR(16), SB(24). BA= .295.
Wendell Fairley- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .296.
Ehire Adrianza- 1 for 3, BB, 2 SB(33). BA= .251.

Peguero is hitting .356 over his last 10 games. He is on the 40 man roster, so could get a late callup after the Cal League playoffs are done.

Low A Lakewood Blueclaws beat the Augusta Greenjackets 4-1:

Nick Liles- 3 for 4, 3 SB(27). BA= .316.
Alex Burg(.222), Chris Dominguez(.269), Ryan Cavan(.279), Luke Anders(.291)- 1 for 4, 2B.
Chris Heston- 8 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 11/2.

Liles is hitting .409 over his last 10 games. He has excellent walk rates and steals bases, but has 0 HR's on the season. Can he make it as a corner OF? Probably not. An example of just how tough it is to make it to the majors, because Liles is obviously a very good player but is a longshot at best. Chris Heston should have success with these K, BB, and groundball rates.

Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes edged the Eugene Emeralds 2-1:

Gary Brown- 0 for 4. BA= .083.
Devin Harris- 3 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .256.
Justin Schumer- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.27.
Aaron King- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.05.
Addison Proszek- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 8.85.

For some reason, I keep wanting to call Schumer, "Chuck". Devin Harris is hitting .343 over his last 10 games. Addison Proszek has had some very rough outings this year. This one was pretty good. Some of you may recall how much I liked Rico Noel before the draft. He plays for the Ems. He drew a walk in this game. He is hitting just .250, but his OBP is .409 and he has stolen 12 bases. I'm going to be following his progress and will be upset if the Padres end up with as good or better CF of the future than Gary Brown except for getting him several rounds later in the draft, because that's the way I would have done it.

DSL Giants won the DSL Championship taking game 4 from the Reds 3-1 for a 3 games to 1 best of 5 victory:

Danny Mujica- 2 for 3, BB.
Jesus Galindo- 1 for 4, 3B.
Luis Angeles- 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.
Franklin Noel- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.

The 21 yo lefty Noel was the hero of the playoffs for the DSL Giants getting 4 Saves while going multiple innings each time allowing 0 runs. I have no idea if he has a future higher up in the organization.

  1. Yeah, I think Gillaspie only has one more option left. Putting him on the 40 man hasn't really worked out, though given how poorly he's played, I can't see anyone claiming him either.

Fairley has been on fire! Hopefully he can carry this to next season.

I would agree with you on Peguero, they really liked him pre-season, so a call-up could happen, though with all the OF, he probably won't see anything more than what Posey saw last season.

  3. Belt has had a whirlwind year. He needs a break. AFL will be a perfect place for him to take the next step.
