Down on the Farm: 08-11-2010

AAA Fresno Grizzlies edged the Albuquerque Isotopes 7-6:

Ben Copeland- 3 for 5. BA= .287.
Jesus Guzman- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .315.
Ryan Rohlinger- 4 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .291.
Henry Sosa- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.00.
Steve Edlefsen- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(6). ERA= 1.91.

Rohlinger could not be called up when the Giants added an infielder because he had been sent down too recently. Sosa just can't seem to find consistency. I hope he is working on developing secondary pitches and throwing strikes. I kind of expect to see his name in a trade report any time.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the New Hampshire Sea Dogs 5-3 in 14 innings:

Thomas Neal- 3 for 7, 2 2B. BA= .296.
Brandon Belt- 2 for 6, 2B, HR(7). BA= .341.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4, 2 BB. BA= .293.
David Quinowski- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.59.

Belt's amazing season rolls on. Nice outing for The Q.

High A Lancaster Jethawks outslugged the San Jose Giants 11-9:

Wendell Fairley- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .297.
Francisco Peguero- 1 for 5, HR(9). BA= .314.
Johnny Monell- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .262.
Jose Flores- 1 for 3, HR(6), BB, S. BA= .322.
Juan Perez- 2 for 6, SB(16). BA= .304.

Nice game for padding the offensive stat lines, but awfully tough on the pitchers.

Low A SAL was idle.

Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes blanked the Eugene Emeralds 7-0:

Carter Jurica- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .205.
Edwin Escobar- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 4.14.
Edward Concepcion- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 7.25.

A dominant start for Escobar. Really like that pickup from Texas for Snyder. Looks like the Giants are going to see if Concepcion can get his feet on the ground 1 inning at a time.

Rookie AZL Giants shut out the Indians 6-0:

Carlos Willoughby- 3 for 5, 2 3B(6). BA= .301.
Charlie Jones- 2 for 4, SF. BA= .282.
Jose De La Cruz- 1 for 3, 2B, HBP. BA= .298.
Dan Runzler- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Kendry Flores- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.98.
Matt Graham- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 2.25.

Yikes! What are the Giants going to do with Runzler when he has to come off the DL? There's a limit on rehab time, right? I guess he has options, so they could send him to Fresno until rosters expand, so it doesn't hurt to have him ready in case someone gets hurt. Like what Matt Graham is doing this season. Low profile, but pitching effectively.

DSL Giants edge the Orioles 8-7 in 11 innings:

Alberto Robles- 2 for 5, BB. BA= .265.
Victor Feliz- 3 for 6. BA= .260.
Shurendell Mujica- 2 for 4, 3 SB(18). BA= .195.
Leonardo Fuentes- 1 for 1, 2B. BA= .244.
Luis Angeles- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.00.

Shurendell is hitting .300 over his last 10 games. They like colorful names in Curacao, huh? Does anyone else think that Luis Angeles is just a bit too close to Los Angeles for comfort?

  1. DrB,

They need to keep Runzler on the DL until Sep 1, that way he's still eligible for the postseason. They can just let him use up his minor league rehab eligibility, which I believe is up to 28-30 days.

If the team does make it to the postseason, it'll be interesting to see how Sabean/Bochy handle the roster/bullpen.

  2. That would be the best plan. I was thinking the allowance for rehab time was less than that, but I'm not an expert on those rules by any stretch.

  3. Yeah, Lancaster is a totally extreme ballpark, so bad that the Wall Street Journal actually had a front page article on the park, via their human interest column.

I'm not sure on the number of days, but I think it is pretty long.

However, I don't think we don't need to keep him on DL to be eligible for post-season, we have DeRosa out for the season, which I think opens up a spot for us to take a September call-up and put him on the playoff roster. That is how the Angels put K-Rod on their playoff roster when they, you know, ...

Unless they are saving that spot for Belt, I don't see any minor leaguer who the Giants would call up and might want to put on the playoff roster.
