Game Wrap 07-06-2010: Giants 6 Brewers 1

Woohoo!! Did we just see a star born tonight? Madison Bumgarner pitched 8 innings of dominating baseball against one of the league's better offenses while the BrewCrew helped the Giants offense out with 2 errors. Key lines:

Andres Torres- 0 for 4, BB, SB(17). BA= .276. Dave Cameron writing for Fangraphs makes a case for Andres Torres to be the starting CF for the NL in the All-Star Game! The think Torres has going for him is that in addition to his solid offensive contribution, he's been a plus defender too. Couple those two elements together and he has a first half WAR (Wins Above Replacement) of 3.2. Now, WAR is a counting stat, so even if Torres played at the level of a replacement player the rest of the year, he would still end up with a WAR of 3.2. For comparison, Fangraphs values each WAR point at about $5 Million. If Andres Torres were to finish the year with a WAR of 3.2, he would be worth about a $15 million contract. If he keeps on playing all year at the pace he showed in the first half,.......well it boggles the mind. 6.4 WAR is a number generally reserved for the Joe Mauers and Chase Utleys of the game.

Buster Posey- 1 for 3, SF. Buster catches again, and what a game he caught! Gotta admit, Buster is making Bochy's pinch running stunt the other day look worse and worse.

Travis Ishikawa- 2 for 4. BA= .321. Is Travis our first baseman of the future, after all? He's sure stroking the ball now, and we all know how he can pick it at first.

Madison Bumgarner- 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.86. I'll just let the boxscore line speak for itself. This kid is obviously for real and looks like he has a ton of room to get better. The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades!!

With the W, the Giants climb back to 3 games over .500. With the Padres losing a close one to the Nats 6-5, the Giants are now 6 games back in the standings. Colorado pounded the Cardinals 12-9 to get to 4 games back. The Dodgers are leading late and will likely finish the night 3 games behind. Arizona lost to the Cubs 6-4 to remain 15 games behind and in last place.

Tim Lincecum takes the mound tomorrow and will try to outdo Durty and MadBum. Let's go for 3 in a row, Timmy!
