Down on the Farm: 07-08-2010

AAA Tacoma Rainiers edged the Fresno Grizzlies 5-4:

Joe Borchard- 2 for 4, HR(10). BA= .290.
Kevin Pucetas- 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 5.74.

At this time, it looks unlikely that either Borchard or Pucetas will get a shot with the Giants.

AA Harrisburg Senators out hit the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-7:

Nick Noonan- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .251.
Brandon Belt- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .455.
Thomas Neal- 2 for 2, BB. BA= .284.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4, 3B. BA- .266.
Michael Main- 4.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 9.00.

At least we are seeing the right names on the offensive highlights. Usually the transition from the Cal League to the Eastern League is a lot smoother for pitchers than it has been for Michael Main.

High A San Jose Giants stomped on the Stockton Ports 11-5:

Juan Perez- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .304.
Wendell Fairley- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .295.
Johnny Monell- 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR(8). BA= .236.
Michael Sandoval- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .273.
Justin Fitzgerald- 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.40.
Ryan Verdugo- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Craig Whitaker- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Fairley is inching toward the .300 BA mark. Look for Monell to heat up the in the last 2 months here. Pablo's big bro is assigned to SJ. Verdugo and Whitaker move up from Augusta.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets edged the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-4:

Ryan Cavan- 0 for 1, 3 BB. BA= .284.
Hector Sanchez- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .274.
Zack Wheeler- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.20.
Andy Reichard- 6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.64.

Hector Sanchez is hitting .333 over his last 10 games. Zack Wheeler was scheduled to pitch just 1 inning coming off the DL for a torn fingernail.

Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Tri-City Dust Devils 6-4 in 14 innings:

Carter Jurica- 2 for 6. BA= .215.
Jesse Shriner- 2 for 5, BB. BA= .298.
Jake Dunning- 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.29.
Kaohi Downing- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Shawn Sanford- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.72.

Not much to comment on here.

AZL Rookie Giants downed the Reds 11-7:

Carlos Willoughby- 1 for 1, 3 BB, SB(12). BA= .288.
Wes Hobson- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB. BA= .348.
Charles Jones- 3 for 4, HR(2), BB. BA= .310.
Jake Dunnington- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.96.

Willoughby is on on base machine with speed to steal bases. I am absolutely loving the Charles Jones draft pick. I think it's especially great that he signed so quickly and is getting a start on his pro career. Dunnington looks like a great find as an undrafted FA out of HS.

DSL Orioles blanked the Giants 3-0:

Really, nothing to see here.

  1. I noticed in the SJ box that Perez was leading off and Peguero was batting 3. Has that been happening a lot? Is there a strategy for that order?

  2. That's been the basic SJ lineup for awhile now. Not sure what the rationale is. Peguero is a free swinger so they may want players with more patience and bat control hitting 1,2 then Peguero to slash away followed by a cleanup hitter. I've always been intrigued by the possibilities of putting 3 rabbits ahead of a cleanup hitter with another power guy at 5 and maybe even at #6.
