Scouting the Draft: Jedd Gyorko

Several sources have the Giants in on SS Jedd Gyorko of West Virginia U. Seems that they flew him out to SF for a workout. I would be on board with Gyorko at #24. He's not a toolshed, but he certainly has the hit tool and that's the most important one. Of course, I can remember when the Giants flew Beau Mills in for a workout, weren't impressed and drafted Madison Bumgarner instead. Offensively, Gyorko seems like a bookend to Buster Posey as he projects as a .300+ hitter with plate discipline and moderate power potential. He probably won't stay at SS, but his bat could be an asset at either 2B or 3B.

Here's Gyorko's offensive lines for the last two seasons:

2010: .381/.472/.750 with 19 HR's.
2009: .421/.487/.658 with 8 HR's.
2008: .409/462/.660 with 8 HR's.

Like how his HR's took a spike without a serious drop in BA or OBP.

While there are a number of excellent possible choices out there for the Giants first round pick, I would be very happy with Jedd Gyorko.

  1. I assume the last line is 2008, little typo.

From the info in your posts, that supports what I've read about him, that he's a hitter who probably moves off SS.

What do you think of Castellanos, Colon, O'Connor, and Sanchez, other names I have often seen in mock drafts for the Giants, in comparison with Gyorko?

  2. OOps, make it Yordy Cabrera, not Sanchez.

  3. Colon has a better chance to stick at SS and may have more power upside, although I'm not sure of that. Gyorko has a much better hit tool than Colon though.

Castellanos, O'Conner and Cabrera are all HS hitters so it's hard to compare. Castellanos probably has a higher power ceiling, but Gyorko will almost certainly hit for higher average. I'm not in love with O'Conner whose main attraction seems to be his versatility. I love Cabrera's size and power potential, but his big downside is he's a high schooler who is almost 20 years old.

Put all that together and it seems to me Gyorko would be a fine pick.

    Will fix the typo. Thanks.
