Game Wrap 06-14-2010: Giants 10 Orioles's 2

The Giants, right now, are a team very close to hitting on all cylinders. Tonight the offense jumped out to an early commanding lead and Jonathan Sanchez put on a nice display of stuff to cruise to the W. Key lines:

Andres Torres- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B, 2 BB. BA= .302. Torres continues to be the answer to the Giants leadoff problems. Oh, and Rowand sat for the 3'rd straight game!

Freddy Sanchez- 2 for 4, SF. BA= .341. I'll say it again. Freddy Sanchez has won a batting title.

Pat Burrell- 2 for 3, HR(3). BA= .252. Batting .333 over his last 10 games as a Giant. 2'nd dinger in 4 games.

Pablo Sandoval- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .282.

Eli Whiteside- 0 for 1, 3 BB. BA= .284.

Jonathan Sanchez- 7.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.78. I tuned in the the 7'th innning. Sanchez had the stuff tonight: A darting 91-92 MPH FB, a sharp slurvy breaking ball, and a wicked, wicked split-change that tailed down and away from RH batters. This guy is on the verge of being one of THE dominant pitchers in the game! He might actully have the best stuff on the team. On this team, that's saying a whole lot!

Jeremy Affeldt- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. Yeah it was mop up, but Affeldt looked like he had his stuff back tonight.

With the W tonight, the Giants gained a full game on the division leading Padres who lost to the Blue Jays 6-3. The Giants also gained a half game on the idle Dodgers and are now tied for second place just 0.5 games behind the Pads. Colorado and Arizona were both idle too.

Joe Martinez gets the start tomorrow. His last game for Fresno was a good one. Hopefully the Giants offense will continue to provide plenty of run support.

  1. Go Giants!

Yeah, you don't hear from the guys complaining about Freddy Sanchez anymore, the conditions are still the same, same trade, same player gone, same player we got.

And the Torres/Rowand situation pricks a big hole the theory that Bochy loves vets. He loves performance, and if you perform, he's going to play you, but if nobody is performing, then he's going with the more proven quality because that is the better bet.

Yes, Sanchez has been the one with the best stuff on the staff, he always easily struck out 9+ K/9 and among the top in the league in that every season. That's why I want to keep him on the staff for a few more seasons, then we can think of trading him, when our control is waning.

  3. I would say Freddy Sanchez is getting paid about right for a player with his resume. The only downside from here on out is if he can't stay healthy.

  4. Freddy Sanchez, Pat Burrell, Aubrey Huff, Juan Uribe? I'd say those pickups are starting to balance the transaction books for Brian Sabean just a little, no?
