Down on the Farm: 06-12-2010

AAA Tacoma Rainiers scored two runs in the bottom of the 9'th to outslug the Fresno Grizzlies 11-10:

Brett Pill- 5 for 5, HR(8). BA= .296.
Jesus Guzman- 3 for 4. BA= .298.
Nestor Rojas- 3 for 4. BA= .350.
Matt Kinney- 4.2 IP, 12 H, 8 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 9.64.

Very nice night for Brett Pill. There aren't any minor league FA's out there who might do better than Kinney? Or some guys who are currently relieving who might be used as starters?

AA Reading Phillies edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-4:

Thomas Neal- 2 for 4. BA= .276.
Michael Ambort- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2). BA= .220.

Ambort is hitting .297 with a SLG% of .541 over his last 10 games. Look out for him if he is ever able to stay heathy for an extended period!

High A San Jose Giants outslugged the Bakersfield Blaze 12-9:

Juan Perez- 2 for 5, 2B(19). BA= .325.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 1, 2B(24), 4 BB, SB(14). BA= .383. OBP= .500.
Charlie Culberson- 2 for 4, 3B, HR(9), SF. BA= .298.
Wendell Fairley- 5 for 5. BA= .284.
Emmanuel Burriss- 0 for 1, 2 HBP. BA= .300.
Justin Fitzgerald- 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.00.

Wow! All kinds of things happening here. I don't recall seeing this combination of high BA with doubles power, OBP and speed in any player before, let alone a first baseman. I am way past ready to see Belt promoted to AA and see him challenged a bit there. Certainly the Cal League pitchers don't see capable of making him swing at their pitches. Culberson had a huge game with 6 RBI's. He has a line of .325/.364/.675 over his last 10 games. His SLG% for the season is over .500 at .509. Fairley is still not hitting for any power, but it's nice to see him getting hits on a steady basis. This game brought his BA way up. He's hitting .353 over his last 10 with a .450 OBP. From Fitzgerald's ERA, you can see that he's pitched very well up until this game.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets topped the Hickory Crawdads 3-1:

Evan Crawford- 1 for 4, 3B(10). BA= .260.
Ryan Cavan- 2 for 4, HR(2). BA= .260.
Luke Anders- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .289.
Tommy Joseph- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .218.
Jorge Bucardo- 8.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 1.57.

Yet another dominant start for Bucardo who is having a great first half of the season. In addition to the stingy ERA, he has 70 K's in 74.1 IP, with a GO/AO= 1.81. Bucardo's GO/AO is down slightly, but his K's are up making me wonder if he's throwing both a 4 seam and 2 seam fastball.

DSL Giants pounded the Phillies 9-2:

Leonardo Fuentes- 3 for 3, 2B(6), BB. BA= .289.
Gabriel Cornier- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .400.
Joan Gregorio- 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.65.

7 of Fuentes' 11 hits have been for extra bases giving him a SLG% of .526. Looks like we may have a star in the making! Gregorio is the 6'7" 18 yo RHP. He's looking good so far too!

  1. Last year we had some prospects in the DSL and I can't seem to find where they will end up. Notably Rey Duran, Carlos Willoughby, and Lorenzo Mendoza. Does anyone know where they are? Will they be in the Arizona Rookie league starting next week?

  2. I know Willoughby has been in extended spring training in Arizona, so I'm pretty sure we will see him on one of the short season leagues. I'm not sure about the other two.

  3. Kinney is part of Sabean's evil master plan to make all the other team's prospects look better than they are so that when they get promoted, they fail. :^)

Yeah, I'm wondering why Belt hasn't been promoted too, there is nobody in AA at 1B who is a prospect blocking him.

Say, think the Giants will draft Pill's brother from Fullerton when he's available for the draft?

Culberson is on FIRE! He could change people's opinion of that draft if he can continue to mash. Fairley too, both are still only, what, 20-21? That's still pretty young for Advanced A league, isn't it?

  4. Culberson is 21 yo and Fairley is 22. Neither are particularly young for high A, but not old either. I don't see age as being an issue with either one. Yeah, if both Culberson and Fairley turned it around, it would make the 2007 draft look a whole lot better. Noonan has disappeared from the Richmond lineup. I assume he has some kind of injury.

It will be interesting to see if Tyler Pill is drafted as a pitcher or hitter.

  5. OK, I was off a year. Yeah, not particularly young or old, about right.

I was expecting Noonan to have a good year, I wonder if he's been struggling with an injury or something, or maybe it'll be like last season where he struggled to figure out pitchers, then heated up at the end.
