If a team is going to rough up Matt Cain, they usually do it in the first inning before he gets the fastball heated up. Tonight, Cain breezed through the first 3 hitters in the Padres lineup almost like they weren't there. I had visions of a brewing no-hitter! Alas, things started to fall apart in the second inning. Cain never really got back on track and once again, the Giants couldn't really break through against the Padre's pitchers. Right now, this team has ownage on the Giants, but they are also very much for real in the NL West. They don't have the best record in the NL by accident. Key lines:

Matt Cain- 6.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 6 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.38. 3 of the BB's were IBB's, but that's not really a good thing either as it meant that there were runners on base already. I'm not sure where Cain's head was at tonight, but it was obviously somewhere else. Bengie Molina looked bad behind the plate, but a lot of it was Cain's failure to hold runners and throwing pitches of a different type than Molina called for. On Will Venable's SB, he took off a full count and a half and was half-way to 2B before Cain even started his delivery!
In summary, virtually no offense plus a very sloppy start by Cain= another loss to the Padres.
The Giants fall to 18-14 while the Pads extended their lead to 2.5 games at 21-12. The Dodgers evened their record at 17-17 with a 6-3 win over the faltering D'Backs who fell further into the cellar at 14-21. Colorado upped their record to 16-17 with a 4-3 win over the Phils. The second game of their DH was postponed.
