Game Wrap 05-11-2010: Padres 3 Giants 2

This was deja vu all over again as the Padres continued their hex over the Giants in a walk-o-rama that was incredibly frustrating and boring to watch. Key lines:

Aubrey Huff= 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .288. Huff is proving to be a pretty good, steady hitter in this lineup.

Juan Uribe-1 for 3, 3B, BB. BA= .265.

Bengie Molina- 1 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .337. Molina has now taken 9 BB's compared to 16 all last year.

Aaron Rowand- 0 for 4, BB. Rowand had a terrible day at the plate. The Giants need his bat against LHP's and LeBlanc completely befuddled him except for the first inning walk.

Barry Zito- 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 7 BB, 2 K's. Surprisingly, of the 12 BB's allowed by Giants pitchers tonight, only 1 scored. Is that right? This game was lost by the offense!

The Giants got some very bad, if not totally surprising, news today that Mark DeRosa is back to square 1 with his wrist. The surgery was a failure! I like what Sabean has done with the farm system, and the overall position he has gotten the Giants in for the future, but he has a disturbing track record of signing damaged goods. Here's a hint Brian, you might want to consider staying away from players with recent wrist or shoulder injuries. Neither of those tend to heal quickly or well.

Around the League: The loss drops the Giants to 18-13, 1.5 games behind the Padres. The Dodgers pounded the D'Backs 13-3. The Dodgers are at 16-17 while the D'Backs fall further in the cellar at 14-20. Colorado's game against the Phils was rained out. Colorado stands at 15-17 in 4'th place.

  1. doc,

seriously...sabeans recent comments shows that he cares little for the farm system, and really has no clue what is going on down there.

as for his history of signing injured players. it didnt stop after el fatso...why should it stop now.

he will chalk up the sanchez and now derosa debacles to bad luck, sign some other injured player who had great numbers 3 years ago, and tell everyone that he is building a winning team with a veteran presence.

and then his manager will bat the backup catcher in the 5 spot.

  2. I don't agree with your first paragraph. IMO, Sabean's comments showed an awareness and frustration with a very real problem, the PCL West is far too extreme as a hitter's league. I don't necessarily agree with his conclusions, but I think he was reacting to criticism for not bringing up Posey. What he was trying to say, in a clumsy way I think, is that you can't go just by PCL stats in deciding to promote a player. Apparently Posey has still has some things the player development people think he needs to work on.

Certainly the criticism that Sabean may not be doing his due diligence in some of his trades and signing is valid.

  3. I can agree that the PCL does inflate hitting nubmers and that in general most of the better prospects are learning their craft in AA but he did make some pretty big blanket statements that were not well thought out.

Perhaps it was just frustration but I a more nuanced way of saying the things would have gone a long way to making a better point. All that he has done now is shake the hornets nest. Not exactly a good decision.

  4. Sabean was just frustrated and said stuff that he shouldn't have said. He feels the preasure of these guys getting hurt like DeRosa and Sanchez. He knows he signed them both for 2 years... Sanchez is a good move still... he will show it in a few weeks!

  5. The problem with any of the minor leagues is that a hitter can have numbers that look great in the majors but because the quality of pitching is so much worse there than the majors, it would not translate if he were to jump to the majors, it would be knocked down a lot.

Posey's numbers until recently were not really that great, certainly not like he owned the pitchers there, but he adjusted and started hitting in May.

Sabean could have handled it better, but I put it up there with his "I'm not an idiot" statement when he traded Matt Williams. He is probably frustrated that all these fans are complaining when the Giants are doing so well.

  6. Sabean has never exactly been a smooth talker. Going all the way back to his famous "I am not an idiot" comment to the "lunatic fringe" comment to now, he's always been thin skinned, defensive and clumsy in his dealings with the press.

IMO, the bigger picture is that he has this organization in a great place for the future with an excellent core of young players and an excellent farm system with a steady stream of new talent being added each year through a great scouting staff.

Pretty much everything else is small stuff, and I'm not sweating the small stuff.
