Game Wrap 05-08-2010: Mets 5 Giants 4

For the second game in a row, the Giants fell behind early, fought back to tie the game in the 9'th inning only to lose it on a walk-off HR, this time extending the Mets into extra innings. Key lines:

Pablo Sandoval- 1 for 4, SF. BA= .294.
Aubrey Huff- 1 for 4, SF. BA= .286.
Bengie Molina- 1 for 1, BA= .333.
Todd Wellemeyer- 4.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.97.
Brandon Medders- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.76.
Jeremy Affeldt- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.92.
Guillermo Mota- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.50.

Not exactly a slump busting day for Pablo, but a significant contribution to the offense. Still needs a day or two off.
Bengie came out with a hammy. Not currently believed to be serious, so probably no DL and no Buster. Just too many walks by Wellemeyer. Those are going to cost you, even with great stuff, which he doesn't have. For awhile it looked like he would right the ship after the second inning, but got in trouble again in the 5'th and Bochy had seen enough. It's a shame the bullpen took the loss as they collectively gave up just the 1 run in 5.2 IP. Mota pitched a shutout 10th before giving up the leadoff bomb in the 11'th.

These kinds of losses are tough to take, but it's not quite as bad as blowing a late lead. Both of the last two games looked like early blowouts and the Giants hung tough and had a chance to win both of them. That's better than getting blown out. If they can hang in there on enough of these games, they will end up winning some of them. There is no chance to win a blowout. This loss leaves the Giants at 17-12.

Around the League: San Diego just kept winning, this time edging out Houston 2-1 behind Jon Garland, a guy I wanted to see the Giants sign. San Diego moves to 1.5 games up on the Giants at 19-11. The BrewCrew brought back memories of Harvey's Wallbangers with a 17-3 crushing of the D'Backs. Arizona is now 14-17. Meanwhile Colorado blanked the Dodges 8-0 behind Jhoulys Chacin as Colorado evened it's record at 15-15 while the Dodgers dropped to 13-17. At least Chacin isn't playing favorites in the division!
