So I'm away for 24 hours and I have to come back and write up two extremely disappointing losses in a row! Jonathan Sanchez started out this game like it was going to be another short outing with his head somewhere besides the game at hand. Both he and the Giants fought back and went to the bottom of the ninth inning tied at 4 only to have it all ruined by yet another walk-off dinger given up by Sergio Romo who has certainly been running hot and cold lately. All in all, the Mets hit 4 HR's, 3 solo shots with Rookie Ike Davis getting two and Barajas getting two including the 2 run game winner. Key lines:
Aaron Rowand- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .333. Gamer keeps it going. As long as he's not swinging for the fences, I think he'll be OK.
Eli Whiteside- 2 for 2. BA= .348. For a guy who has no history of hitting worth beans, Whiteside has made his contributions this year so far.
John Bowker- 1 for 1, HR(2). Sometimes you just catch lightning in a bottle. Bowker has the power if he can just make more consistent contact. I really thought the Giants were destined to win this one after he tied it with a pinch HR in the top of the 9'th.
Jonathan Sanchez- 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, 3 HR. ERA= 3.00. One of the silver linings to this game is that Sanchez hung in there when he could easily have gone off on one of his bad-body-language zone outs. He's had trouble holding runners and when he has had to do it, it has been clearly a distraction for him. The 6'th inning, when he gave up a leadoff single to Jose Reyes, one of the fastest, best basestealers in the game was masterful. Sanchez held Reyes for first base with a combination of throw-overs, varying how long he held the ball in the set position, and slide steps. He forced the Mets to burn an out getting Reyes to 2B and then pitched his way out of the inning without giving up a run. The then went out and had a clean 7'th inning. If Sanchez ends up having a good-great season, we may well look back at that inning as the moment he grew up as a pitcher.
Sergio Romo- 0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 4.50. I don't know about my man Sergio. There are whispers that the league has cought up with his stuff and knows what to look for now. At the very least, he needs to get a game or two off here and there and the rest of the bullpen needs to carry some of the setup load.
The loss drops the Giants to 17-11.
Around the League: The Padres kept winning with a 7-0 shellacking of the Astros Mat Latos showed that his shutout work against the Giants was no fluke. The Pads are now 18-11 0.5 games up on the Giants. The D'Backs dropped to 14-16, 4.5 games off the Padres pace, with a 3-2 loss to the BrewCrew. The Dodgers edged Colorado 6-5 to drop the Rockies to 14-15 while improving the Dodgers' record to 13-16.
