Game Wrap 04-07-2010: Giants 10 'Stros 4

Matt Cain got all the run support he needed and then some. Unfortunately it didn't come in time to give him the W, but the Giants hitters abused the Houston bullpen to win going away 10-4 for an opening series sweep. Key lines:

Aaron Rowand- 4 for 6, 3B. Just as I was about to write him off....

Edgar Renteria- 5 for 5, BB. Rent is red hot to start the season!

John Bowker- 1 for 4, HR(1). That's why he's in the lineup!

Juan Uribe- 2 for 5. BA= .417. Uribe acts like he doesn't want to come out when Freddy Sanchez comes back.

Travis Ishikawa- 1 for 1, HR(1). Travis wants to show he's good for more than just defense.

Matt Cain- 6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, GO/AO= 10/5. In his last ST game, Cainer had a GO/AO of something like 1/11. He was working up in the zone and had the A's in the popcorn machine. Today, he was more of a GB pitcher. Interesting, at least to me.

Jeremy Affeldt- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, BS(1), W(1).

Guillermo Mota- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. It will take a few more mopup roles like this for me to have much faith in Mota. Maybe Bochy feels the same way and that's why he used Mota here?

Around the league:

Dodgers lose second straight to the Buccos in 10 innings, 4-3. Clayton Kershaw walked 6 batters in 4.1 IP.

Rockies lose to the BrewCrew, drop to 1-2.

Arizona won the rubber game of their opening series with the Padres.

So, the Giants are in sole possession of first place, 1 game ahead of Arizona. 2 games ahead of the Rocks and Pads and 2.5 games ahead of the Choking Dogs. Yeah, I know it's early, but I am lovin' it!

Jason Heyward and the Braves travel to SF for the Giants home opening series. That should be good!

The minor leagues kick off tomorrow. We'll get down to the nitty gritty of prospect watching with daily Down on the Farm reports.

  1. Exciting times, eh, DrB?

It should be a good test against the Braves, I think it could go either way, 1-2, 2-1, but I lean towards 2-1, with Sanchez taking on Hudson and winning, and, of course, Timmy beating up on Lowe in his start (Wellemeyer, meh...)

I think that this is probably the most excited I am about the minors ever. Lots of good to great prospects all around, I think this is probably as deep in talent as we have had ever.

  2. I learned the hard way a long time ago to not try and predict the outcome of any single game or series.

I am very optimistic about Sanchez this year, but Hudson is a good pitcher too. Timmy is Timmy. Gotta feel good about any of his starts. If Wellemeyer can give a QS in 2 out of 3 starts, I'll take that and let the chips fall, but you never know about a 3 game series.
