Down on the Farm: 04-09-2010

We have the completion of two suspended games as well as the four regularly scheduled games to report from last night. Here's the key lines:

AAA Fresno lost to Reno 8-5:

Buster Posey- 2 for 4.

Madison Bumgarner- 3 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. Reportedly topped out at 88 MPH. Reno is a tough place to pitch, but still, this isn't good.

AA Bowie topped the Squirrels 6-4(completion of suspended game):

Thomas Neal- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. Nice start by Neal.

Roger Kieshchnick- 2 for 5.

Jackson Williams- 2 for 3, 2 2B, HBP.

AA Richmond shut out Bowie 2-0(7 inning regularly scheduled game):

Darren Ford- 1 for 3, S, 2 SB(2).

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 4.

Clayton Tanner- 5.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 13/1. Tanner was more of an extreme GB pitcher in this game than he has generally been in the past.

Bowie: Steve Johnson- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. Giants Rule 5 draftee returned to Baltimore in Spring Training.

High A San Jose edged the Nuts 4-3:

Ryan Lormand- 3 for 4, 2B.

Josh Mazzola- 1 for 3, 3B, BB.

Brew Biery- 2 for 4.

Craig Westcott- 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.

Jason Stoffel- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, S(1).

Low A Augusta beat Greensboro 7-3(completion of suspended game):

Ryan Lollis- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B, 2 BB.

Tommy Joseph- 3 for 4, HR(1). Joseph gets off to a great start to his pro career!

Jose Valdez- 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. Watch this kid. He could rocket like Dan Runzler!

Jose Casilla- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.

Low A Augusta topped Greensboro 5-2( 7 inning regularly scheduled game):

Evan Crawford- 1 for 3, BB, SB.

Ryan Cavan- 2 for 3, BB, 2 SB. Cavan seems to have some speed we didn't know about.

Juan Martinez- 1 for 3, HR(1).

Jorge Bucardo- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 8/1.

Summary: Bumgarner is the major downer in an otherwise good night for the farm system.

Around the Minors: Pedro Alvarez, Pittsburgh's #1 prospect hit 2 HR's for AAA Indianapolis.

  1. Just noticed that Cavan has been playing second. I wonder if this is a permanent move. Have you heard any reports on his defense? I like what he has shown with the bat so far in his pro career.

I am hoping the find a way to get Hector Sanchez more playing time. With Joseph sticking at catcher it seems like he won't see much action with Augusta. Maybe they should try him in the outfield or something. They seem to have a lot of depth in the organization at catcher.

  2. My understanding is that Cavan is the starting 2B for the season at Augusta.

Hopefully between DH and maybe subbing at other positions, both Sanchez and Joseph will get plenty of AB's. I agree that catcher is all of a sudden a strong position for the Giants. Johnny Monell in San Jose has some promise too.
