Giants Draft Review: 2000-2002

I started my Draft Reviews with the year 2003 because that's how far back BA's Draft Databases go. A reader pointed me to the the draft lists on the sfgiants.com that go back to 2000. I will simply list the players and their draft position from each season 2000-2002 who played on a MLB roster:

2000:

Round 1: Boof Bonser, RHP.
Round 2: Lance Niekro, 3B.
Round 22: Jason Ellison, OF.
Round 28: Alex Hinshaw, LHP. (Alex was not signed this year. The Giants drafted him a total of 3 times before he finally signed).
Round 31: Brian Burres, LHP.

2001:

1. Brad Hennessey, RHP.
2. Noah Lowry, LHP.
3. Todd Linden, OF.
4. Jesse Foppert, RHP.
8. Jason Waddell, LHP.
17. Steve Holm, C.
47. Scott Munter, RHP.

2002:

1. Matt Cain, RHP.
2. Fred Lewis, OF.
3. Dan Ortmeier, OF.
4. Kevin Correia, RHP.
8. Clay Hensley, RHP.
21. Travis Ishkawa, 1B.
29. Alex Hinshaw, LHP. (again, not signed this year).
31. Matt Palmer, RHP.

Grades? I guess I'd give 2000 a D, 2001 a C+, and 2002 a B+.

  1. When I look at that 2001... What if Foppert had not been injured, or at least not hid his injury? What if Linden had continued on his success at AAA? That could have been some draft.

  2. I was looking at that too, and wondering what might have been. One thing I think you can see from these reviews is that the Giants didn't just suddenly start drafting well in 2006. They had some decent to good drafts early in the decade before Sabes got the bright idea to start punting picks. Fortunately, it appears that even Sabean has seen the folly of that plan and currently values the draft. We'll see if his resolve stays firm when the Giants draft lower in the order. Matt Cain is proof that you can still find star players in the bottom third of the first round. What if Sabes had dumped that pick for a player like Michael Tucker?
